Google Maps showing location of the Abraham Kackley cabin, 2 miles east of Capon Bridge, WV, and 1.5 miles west of the WV-VA border on Rt 50. Note: some maps show the cross street as Old Bucks Trail but current maps show it as Clark Ln.
Abraham Kackley's home was the easiest of my early ancestors to locate, since it is still standing alongside a major cross-country road. Google Maps knows where it is, as do the locals and all who pass by it daily.

He was the first of eleven children born to Catherine and Elias, Sr. He was born Oct. 31, 1771 in Frederick County, VA and died June 15, 1849 at Capon Bridge, VA. His profession was farmer.

Abraham married Christina Whissen (or Whisner) on Nov. 26, 1793. In the late 1790's, they moved from Frederick County to Hampshire County, VA. This was at least 20 years prior to his father's death.

Abraham bought land along the current Rt. 50 and built a cabin that remains standing, although in poor shape, as of Google's last streetview image of June 2018. Known in the area as the Abraham Kackley cabin, it is a 2-story log structure that has been modified and reinforced by later owners. The cabin is listed as a historic structure within Hampshire County, WV, so perhaps it will be preserved or at least allowed to remain standing.

Abraham was also a deacon in the Christian Disciples or Disciples of Christ church and was a lay preacher in the local area. Dr. Kern's article reports that Abraham was ordained by Rev. Christy Sine on Jan. 1, 1824. The cabin was reportedly the site of gatherings of the local "congregation", especially when Rev. Sine came to visit. Eventually, Rev. Sine married Abraham's daughter, Margaret.

Abraham and Christina had 12 children. Many Kackleys are buried the nearby cemetery and many descendents reside in the Martinsburg, WV area. But my ancestor, Hamilton Jefferson (Jeff) migrated westward with his wife, Margaret (Peggy) Parish.
